Mary W. Mannhardt, M. ED.

As a world-class distance runner, I received a full athletic scholarship to Georgetown University where my athletic career abruptly ended when, as a result of anorexia and depression, I attempted suicide by jumping from a bridge in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

My suicide attempt left me paralyzed from the chest down. After therapy and a lengthy recovery period, I became determined to help others and went public with my story. My biography, Dark Marathon was published by Zondervan in 1989.

My story has appeared in Young Miss, People and Seventeen Magazines and in the New York Times.

I have told my story before national audiences on the Today Show, ABC’s World News Tonight and Geraldo. I have been telling my story for 20 years, offering educational programs in schools and colleges.
